When the new FOTO WIEN Festival, Month of Photography, gets underway for the first time, the whole of Vienna will be given over to photography from 20 March to 20 April 2019. The aim of this major event is to showcase not just photography as an art medium but also the local photography scene. For a whole four weeks, photography will be the city’s main theme. As part of FOTO WIEN, more than 100 partners in the programme – museums, exhibition venues, galleries, art universities, artists’ initiatives, and off-spaces – will offer new insights into both the local and the international photography scene.

FOTO WIEN provides inspiration, a cultural experience, and an opportunity for new discoveries. Visitors are invited to explore exciting photography projects throughout Vienna. And, in order to delve even deeper into the photography theme, FOTO WIEN is setting up its very own Festival Headquarters, also a first. Over 19 days the Otto Wagner Postal Savings Bank in the capital’s first district is to become the hub of Vienna’s photography scene. The Festival Headquarters provide space for photo exhibitions, a Photobook Market, and a photo trade fair; it is also a venue for international discussions on the big topic of photography. The exhibitions are complemented by workshops, portfolio reviews, lectures and much more.

The reorientation of FOTO WIEN is also an opportunity to explore the procedural aspects of a festival. The Month of Photography label originated in Paris and has subsequently been adopted by numerous European cities. So FOTO WIEN, together with the host country France, is paying tribute to the underlying idea of a photo festival with its own exhibition at the Festival Headquarters and in the public space.

FOTO WIEN is a member of the European Month of Photography (EMOP), which also includes photography festivals in Athens, Berlin, Bratislava, Budapest, Ljubljana, Luxemburg and Paris. The aim of the EMOP is to strengthen the international networking of the photo scene and to intensify the exchange of experience and information at a European level. The result of this collaboration will be showcased at the joint exhibition Bodyfiction featured at the Festival Headquarters.
