Gregor Sailer about the project "The Box"
These large-format pictures, taken in harsh black and white contrast, show a production site of the world's first fighter aircraft with jet engine technology that has been inaccessible to the public for many decades. During World War II, this aircraft was produced under inhumane conditions by forced laborers in a gallery of the former Schwaz mine. Today, the so-called "Messerschmitthalle" is located in absolute darkness in a Tyrolean mine without any infrastructure. With a specially designed and elaborately installed lighting concept, Sailer brings this non-place to light in all its brutality and harshness and provides a photographic document of an otherwise invisible reality.
